Statin use and prediabetes risk: prediction model development and causal inference using data from the Whole Systems Integrated Care Database, North West London

Project Identifier: SDE_LDN_PROJ_226

Project Overview

This project aims to investigate the long-term risk of prediabetes among statin users, identify the proportion of this risk attributable to statin use, and examine how this component influences the overall long-term risk of prediabetes. We want to enhance the coherence of statin-associated lipid-lowering strategies, further improve the achievement rate of lipid-lowering goals, and reduce the burden on both individuals and society by developing a statin-induced prediabetes prediction model.

Public Benefit Statement

To assist general practitioners in optimizing statin-associated lipid-lowering strategies and preventing the onset of prediabetes in North West London, we want to enhance the coherence of statin-associated lipid-lowering strategies, further improve the achievement rate of lipid-lowering goals, and reduce the burden on both individuals and society by developing a statin-induced prediabetes prediction model. In addition, we seek to identify key factors along the causal pathway between statin use and prediabetes and propose relevant management strategies to mitigate statin-induced prediabetes risk and enhance patients’ confidence and positive perceptions toward statin therapy, thereby promoting the sustainable and effective implementation of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
