The London Care Record was used over 24 million times by frontline health and care staff during 2024 helping them provide faster, safer and more effective care across the Capital and beyond. This is an increase of around 44 per cent compared to 2023 (30 January 2025).
The London Care Record is a single and secure view of a person’s health and care information which helps ensure frontline staff have the information they need about a person at the point of care, to inform their clinical decision-making.
It includes any conditions which a person has, their test results, medicines, allergies and plans for their care and other useful information such as hospital discharge summaries is also available within the record. Only staff involved in a person’s care are allowed to access the information.
The London Care Record is used over two million times a month by over 100,000 different health and care staff in London and some neighbouring areas. In total it has now been used almost 64 million times since it was introduced in 2020.
Based on independent analysis the London Care Record has saved health and care professionals’ time up to a value of almost £39 million during the year and over £100 million in total.
Several key developments helped make 2024 another milestone year for the London Care Record including:
- More connections: thanks to new connections including Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and more of the Capital’s care homes and community pharmacies more frontline staff can now use the London Care Record.
- More pan-London data sharing: during 2024 nine more Trusts, including London North West University Healthcare and Moorfields Eye Hospital, and the first local authority (London Borough of Bexley), started sharing patient information across the Capital in the London Care Record helping to make it an even richer tool.
- Connecting more communities: through new connections with areas such as Oxford, Bedfordshire, Suffolk and North East Essex we are supporting staff provide more joined-up care for patients who are referred for treatment and care in the Capital.
- Local initiatives: local teams across the Capital have worked hard to maximise the benefits of the London Care Record. For example Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust ran a staff training programme that increased their views of the London Care Record from 6,600 in September 2023 to over 34,000 in July 2024.
OneLondon is working with its partners to build on this success and has ambitious plans for 2025. This includes even more connections as well as continuing to improve access to the London Care Record and enhancing the richness of the information it contains.
Sally Wiltshire, Senior Programme Manager at OneLondon, said:
“Thank you to everyone involved across the OneLondon partnership in helping make 2024 another milestone year for the London Care Record with over 24 million views. That is over 24 million moments of care that have been supported by health and care staff having the information they need at the point of care. This year we have ambitious plans to build on this success so even more frontline staff can use this essential tool, supporting them provide safe and effective care more quickly.”
Dr Jack Barker, Chest and General Physician in south east London, said:
“I recently saw a patient with chest complaint who’d had a chest x-ray at Barts Hospital the week before which I could see in the London Care Record. This meant I did not need to arrange another x-ray at the local hospital here in south east London. Instant access to this information prevented having to put the patient through an unnecessary x-ray and meant she could get the right care more quickly. This is brilliant stuff and what the London Care Record is all about – supporting effective and joined-up patient care.”
Juliet Butler, Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner at Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Whether working on a ward or in the Emergency Department the London Care Record is my ‘go to tool’ for gathering information about a patient so I can provide them with the best possible care as quickly as possible. I simply don’t think I could do my job as effectively without it. My advice to any health and care professional is to give it a go. It is really easy to access and use. Before long it will be a must have tool for you like it is for me!!”
Mike Armstrong, Managing Director of Havering Care Homes, said:
“The London Care Record is fantastic. It gives staff a much richer health and care history about our residents than we would get from hospital discharge summaries or GP records helping us plan and provide the best possible care. It is also vital in understanding a resident’s medications as well as any care plans they have in place, potentially preventing unnecessary hospital admissions. Put simply the London Care Record has been a real game-changer for care homes.”
