London Secure Data Environment Driver Projects

Introducing the London Secure Data Environment ‘Driver Projects’

OneLondon is supporting four NHS-led ‘Driver Projects’ that will help to showcase the potential of the new London Secure Data Environment (SDE) and inform its ongoing development ahead of its full launch next year, while delivering health improvement benefits for Londoners. These projects cover:

The ‘Driver Projects’ will showcase the London SDE’s potential to accelerate adoption and learning across systems. They will also demonstrate how bringing together the London SDE with wider data assets and innovations from across the Capital can deliver significant value and benefits for Londoners in terms of health and care improvement.

Transforming heart health

Project CARDINAL is working on the prevention, detection, and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), through three scalable programmes:

Together, the wide-scale adoption of these programmes will show how the secure and collaborative use of NHS data within the London SDE can lead to smarter decisions, faster treatment, and better outcomes for people living with, or are at risk of, CVD.

Transforming mental health support for children and young people

MINDS-LC is building a smarter, more inclusive mental health system by linking data from schools-based mental health, social care, and other health services through the London SDE.

This will enable the deployment and evaluation of innovative and community-based solutions that increase access to services, reduce pressure on acute care, and deliver better long-term outcomes for London’s children.

Tackling antimicrobial resistance

RADIX stands for Real-time Antimicrobial Digital Intervention Exchange. It will use data in the London SDE to deliver insights that improve clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

By improving antibiotic prescribing for Londoners, immediate harm can be reduced from bug drug mismatches, as well as future harm from growing antimicrobial resistance.

Improving cancer care

The London SDE is also supporting a national exemplar research project based in London known as OncoLlama. This is an NHS-developed AI tool that can securely extract clinical information from text documents, such as clinical letters. It does this with over ninety-eight point five per cent accuracy across twenty types of cancer in adults, and helps include relevant data that would otherwise be left out of research.

By turning clinical notes into usable data, OncoLlama helps researchers understand cancer patterns, improve services, and accelerate clinical trials.

This project also brings together five leading cancer centres from across England to explore how real-world data can support research.
